However, neither Columbus nor Barents were the first to set foot on the “New Land.” It is believed that the Vikings arrived in Svalbard long before the Dutch. However, they did not settle in these inhospitable lands. So what has changed? Why now? What draws people to the North? Initially, it was certainly the desire to discover unknown lands. To go higher, further, to be first. The era of great geographical discoveries falls at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The most famous ones from school textbooks are the sea route to India discovered by Vasco da Gama and the aforementioned Columbus expedition to the Americas. The list of the golden age of travel closes with 1596, when Willem Barents reached the icy Spitsbergen. The world map is almost complete, but unfortunately, we will have to wait a long time to see the final version.

Over time, the archipelago began to attract “treasure” hunters. Hunting whales, seals, foxes, and polar bears proved highly profitable. Back then, no one worried about the consequences. As a mathematician, I should include some statistics here, but they’re supposedly discouraging, so I’ll refrain, though I admit it’s with a heavy heart. Fortunately, scientists joined the fray, and someone finally took an interest in the disappearing whale population. Small research stations began to appear in the North, some of which survive to this day. Svalbard proved to be a treasure trove of climate knowledge; it’s here that we can literally see the changes taking place. Global temperature rises no longer shock anyone. We’re constantly bombarded with catastrophic news. To truly convince ourselves that the situation is worse than we think, I invite you to the Arctic. Here, disappearing glaciers leave a trail that’s hard to ignore. It’s tangible evidence we can see with our own eyes.

Over time, it was discovered that Svalbard’s natural resources were relatively easily accessible, making the Arctic a tempting target for large mining companies. Several mines were built in the early 20th century, necessitating the development of infrastructure. Miners needed shelter, after all, and food and other essentials for survival periodically arrived at the port. Later, roads were built, a school was built, and a shop was established. People settled here permanently, and it seems they won’t be leaving anytime soon.

Christopher Columbus discovered America, and Willem Barents discovered Spitsbergen.
